How do we get authority links - is Google at it?

A good great SEO friend of mine is obsessed by authority links. If you don’t know what authority links are, they are additional links that are indented underneath the main result in Google pointing to other pages in that website.

In addition, they are generally the first result in Google for a particular search term - but I’ve seen some at No. 2, 3 etc.

They look at this:

So, how do you get your site to become an authority site? Can you? Is it the number of links? Page Rank? Anchor text, Keyword Density, plain luck or a combo?

XLWEB have become an authority link for “Internet Marketing Glasgow“.

Does anyone know how this happens? We’ve been at No 1 for internet marketing glasgow for a while and recently got authority links - is it because we’ve been number 1 for this for a certain amount of time in Google that makes you an authority.

Also, we have never really promoted these keywords or phrase.

All comments welcome……

I believe it is being at the top of google for at leats 6 months plus. There is a discussion on a forum I am a member off and it seems to be the general consensus.
